So I have been visiting family for about a week and let me say, the Irish know how to have a good time. I still can't believe all the amazing adventures I have had the privilege of experiencing. Traveling to all these different countries opened my eyes to new cultures, cities, and ways of life. For anyone contemplating traveling any time soon, you have to do it!
Here it is: my top 7 favorite castles in Ireland (in no particular order)
Leap Castle
The world's most haunted castle, used as a fortress, home, and TOMB (Leap Castle is home to many fascinating and sometimes horrific spirits), Built in the early 1500's under the supervision of the powerful and warring O'Carroll clan... Leap Castle has been the center of much bloodshed and brutal atrocities.
Hellfire Club
Montpelier Hill, better known as the Hellfire Club to Dubliners, is a lovely place for a walk.
Loftus Hall
I could have lived here, in a large mansion house located on the Hook Peninsula (the history goes back through the centuries). It was built in 1350 by the Redmond family during the time of the Black Death.
Charleville Castle
Summary: Midlands of Ireland/architectural grandeur/historical significance. The story of Charleville Castle begins in 1798, when Charles William Bury, Earl of Charleville, under the inspiration of his artistic partner, Lady Catherine Maria Bury, developed her initial paper sketches into grandiose plans.
Kilkenny Castle
Few buildings in Ireland can boast a longer history of continuous operation than Kilkenny Castle. Founded soon after the Norman conquest of Ireland, the castle has been rebuilt, extended and adapted to suit changing circumstances and uses for a period of 800 years.
Kilkea Castle
One of Ireland's oldest inhabited castles, Kilkea Castle is a hidden jewel just one hour from Dublin. Best. View. Ever.
Ross Castle
Ross Castle perches in an inlet of Lough Leane.
